A drink-driver who led police on a pursuit through Brighton has been jailed.
Roads Policing Unit officers were on patrol in the Seven Dials area on 22 July last year when they spotted a Seat Arona being driven at speed.
They followed the vehicle through the city until it came to a stop in Cannon Place, where the driver and sole occupant was detained, ensuring he caused no harm to himself or anyone else.
He was identified as Jordan Lewis, 26, of no fixed address.
Lewis was arrested and charged with taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving with no licence and driving with no insurance. He was also charged with drink-driving – specifically, he had 137mg of alcohol per 100ml blood. The legal limit is 80mg.
He answered “no comment” to all questions in interview, but admitted all four offences.
At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 11 March, Lewis was sentenced to a total of 34 weeks’ imprisonment due to the seriousness of offences committed.
He was also disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.
The consequences of drink or drug-driving could include:
- Killing or seriously injuring yourself or someone else;
- A minimum 12-month ban;
- An unlimited fine;
- A possible prison sentence;
- A criminal record, which could affect your current and future employment;
- An increase in your car insurance costs;
- Difficulty travelling to countries such as the USA.
If you know someone is driving while over the limit or after taking drugs, call 999.
