Residents in the Meads District of Eastbourne are being invited to two public meetings this week to discuss plans aimed at making the area healthier, greener and more connected.

The first meeting will take place at the Lansdowne Hotel at 7 pm on Wednesday, 22 July, followed by a second session at Meads Hall at 10 am on Saturday, 25 July.

Both events will give residents the chance to hear the findings from a series of community workshops held in June and help decide which ideas should be taken forward.

Suggestions put forward so far include safer walking and cycling routes, lower speed limits, wildflower verges, hedgehog corridors, improved management of heavy rainfall and new or enhanced social spaces where neighbours can meet.

The project is being led by the Meads Wellbeing Working Group, which was launched in January as part of the Meads Neighbourhood Panel. It brings together volunteers, community leaders and ward councillors to support a healthier and more vibrant neighbourhood.

Residents were first invited to contribute ideas in May, with organisers saying: “This is a community-led initiative, which means the most important voice is that of residents.”

The meetings this week will allow people to discuss priorities, support proposals and volunteer to help lead or develop particular projects.

Organisers said the group is “looking at the ‘big picture’ of how our surroundings affect our daily lives.”

Oliver Sterno, chairman of the Meads Wellbeing Working Group, said: “We are at a pivotal point in an evolution. To adapt our ways of living in gentle but significant ways is critical to our survival. We hope that these measures we are advocating in our environmental and social adaptation will bring our whole community together in achieving such change.”
