Firefighters have extinguished a large crop fire on Hayling Island after the emergency services received around 40 calls reporting the blaze.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said its control room began receiving calls at around midday, with members of the public reporting a fire in fields off Manor Road.
Around 50 firefighters were sent to the scene as crews worked to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further across the affected area.
The fire service later confirmed the flames had been extinguished, although crews remained at the scene to dampen down the land and deal with any remaining hotspots.
Fire engines and specialist support vehicles were deployed from stations across Hampshire, highlighting the scale of the emergency response.
Crews attending the incident came from Hayling Island, Emsworth, Fareham, Cosham, Bordon, Alton, Portchester, Southsea and Horndean.
Support was also provided by teams from Eastleigh Fire and Rescue Headquarters.
The large number of calls made to the fire service’s control room helped alert emergency crews to the rapidly developing incident.
Firefighters are expected to continue checking the affected area to make sure the fire has been fully extinguished and does not reignite.
There have also been no reports of anyone being injured.
The incident comes during the summer months, when dry crops, grassland and vegetation can allow fires to spread quickly, particularly during warm or windy weather.
