Flood alerts are in force across large parts of Sussex today, as the region remains under a yellow weather warning for heavy rain until 10pm tonight.
The Environment Agency says persistent rainfall could lead to flooding of some homes, businesses and roads, particularly in low-lying areas and near rivers. There is also a risk of disruption to bus and train services, with drivers urged to take extra care on the roads.
Several river catchments across Sussex are currently under alert. These include the Western Rother near Midhurst, the River Adur East Branch around Shermanbury, and the Cuckmere at Hellingly and Alfriston. Flood alerts are also in place along the River Uck in the areas around Buxted and Uckfield.
Officials warn that river levels may rise quickly following periods of heavy rain, increasing the risk of localised flooding. People living in affected areas are being advised to monitor river levels, check drains and gullies for blockages, and prepare to protect property where possible.
Motorists are being reminded not to drive through floodwater and to allow extra time for journeys, particularly during the evening rush hour. Train and bus passengers are also being advised to check for service updates before travelling.
The Environment Agency says it continues to monitor conditions closely and will issue further warnings if the situation worsens.
