Gunwharf Quays contributed more than £145 million to the local economy and supported almost 2,800 jobs during 2025, according to a new report.
Landsec, which owns the Portsmouth retail and leisure destination, has published its annual social and economic impact report detailing the centre’s contribution to employment, community projects and sustainability.
The report found Gunwharf Quays contributed £145,499,975 to the local economy and supported 2,757 jobs across Landsec, its retail partners and other businesses operating at the site.
It also helped 168 people move closer to employment through work placements and partnerships designed to provide practical experience within the retail and hospitality industries.
Landsec said Gunwharf Quays generated £580,943.40 in social value during the year through community grants, bursaries, volunteering schemes, employment programmes and partnerships with local organisations.
The company said the initiatives were intended to support community wellbeing, strengthen local relationships and create opportunities for residents.
The destination also reported a 30 per cent reduction in its energy intensity during 2025.
A rooftop solar panel scheme, completed at the beginning of the year, includes 1,287 panels and is expected to generate around 550,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Landsec said this would be enough to power 135 UK homes or charge 225 electric cars, while reducing carbon emissions by approximately 115 tonnes each year.
Gunwharf Quays has continued to expand its retail offering, with brands including HOKA, Piglet in Bed and Oliver Bonas opening their first UK outlet stores at the centre.
Plans have also been announced to redevelop the harbour-facing Waterfront area as part of a wider £45 million investment project.
The proposed improvements are expected to create additional jobs and enhance the experience for residents and visitors.
Gunwharf Quays also works with organisations including Pompey in the Community and runs initiatives such as Made in Portsmouth, which aims to promote local talent and improve access to opportunities.
Yvonne Clay, Centre Director at Gunwharf Quays, said: “Retail destinations are part of the fabric of the communities they serve. They help local businesses grow, create employment opportunities and provide places where people can come together, connect and spend time.
“The findings published today demonstrate the important contribution Gunwharf Quays continues to make to Portsmouth. By investing in the destination, supporting employment, working with community partners and operating more sustainably, we’re helping businesses and communities thrive. In turn, that attracts further investment, supports long-term growth and creates lasting value for the local area.”
