Hundreds of e-scooters and e-bikes have been seized by Hampshire Police over the past year as part of a continued crackdown on illegal and dangerous use.
At the latest commissioner’s oversight of policing services (COPS) event, Chief Constable Alexis Boon said the growing popularity of e-scooters has raised significant safety concerns, particularly when used irresponsibly in public spaces.
The online question-and-answer session is a tool used by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary to allow residents to raise concerns about road safety, anti-social behaviour, rural crime, police visibility and business crime among others.
Appearing at the April 22 session, Chief Constable Boon said: “E-scooters have become increasingly prevalent, and in the wrong hands they can be absolutely dangerous to members of the public.
“They have the potential to cause serious injuries, and we take that risk very seriously.”
In the last 12 months alone, officers have seized around 500 e-scooters and e-bikes. Police say enforcement is focused on riders using the vehicles illegally on pavements or in a dangerous manner.
The Chief Constable added: “Our neighbourhood policing teams are actively targeting those riding irresponsibly.
“We do take action, and we will continue to seize vehicles where necessary.”
Despite ongoing enforcement, police acknowledge that tackling the problem requires support from the public.
“This remains a constant priority for us. But we also need help. Parents, please do not buy e-scooters for your children. They are extremely dangerous.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones also pointed to measures aimed at preventing repeat offences.
She said that a contract with Silverlake Garage allows police to dispose of seized vehicles, including crushing those linked to illegal activities such as street racing or drug-related offences.
Authorities say they will continue to take a firm stance as concerns grow over the misuse of electric vehicles on Hampshire’s roads and pavements.
