The Horse and Groom in East Ashling has raised £17,075 to support the work of local homelessness charity Stonepillow.
The pub raised the money by asking customers to add £1 to their bills, with the business then generously matching every pound donated.
The initiative has been praised as a strong example of a local business and its customers coming together to support a cause making a real difference in the community.
Stonepillow supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Chichester, Bognor Regis and the surrounding areas, providing practical help, advice and support to those in need.
Owner John Ayton said the pub was proud to back the charity’s work.
“Matching the total raised was simply our way of showing we’re fully behind the work Stonepillow do,” Owner John Ayton explained.
John, general manager Dan Bullock and head chef Luke Cockram later visited Stonepillow’s Chichester hub to see first-hand how the money will help support people locally.
During the visit, the team spoke about the positive response from customers and what it meant to be able to bring people together behind a local cause.
The fundraising total reflects hundreds of small donations from customers, boosted by the pub’s decision to match the amount raised.
General manager Dan Bullock said customers had welcomed the chance to support the charity through something as simple as a meal or drink.
“People genuinely appreciate knowing that their meal or drink is contributing to something meaningful,” said Dan.
The Horse and Groom has thanked its customers and staff for their support, saying the success of the fundraiser shows the impact that can be made when a community works together.
The money raised will now go towards helping Stonepillow continue its vital work supporting people facing homelessness.
