Southampton’s new food waste trucks have been given a colourful new identity after a school competition invited children to come up with creative names for the fleet.
Hundreds of entries were submitted by pupils across the city, with six winning names chosen by the Lord Mayor.
The competition was a way of making sustainability fun and accessible for children, while encouraging families to think more about what happens to food waste after it leaves the kitchen.
Food waste recycling plays an important role in reducing the amount of rubbish sent for disposal. When food scraps are separated properly, they can be collected and processed instead of being thrown in with general waste.
It also helps reduce environmental impact, as food waste that ends up in landfill can produce methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Recycling food waste means it can be put to better use, including being turned into compost or used to generate renewable energy.
Names chosen by Schools:
- Chompy Wompy – named by Marley Jones from St. John's Primary School
- Binderella – named by Izzy Hutcher from Tanner's Brook Primary School
- Bin Appetit – named by Athena-Victoria Samson Cayabyab from Kanes Hill Primary School
- FRED – named by Esmae Lucas from Mansbridge Primary School
- Nomatron 3000 – named by Freddie Grove from Freemantle Academy
- Foody Trudy – named by Josephine Pearl Tennant from Swaythling Primary School
Kate Brosnan, Headteacher at Mansbridge Primary School added: “The competition created such a buzz in school. It was a brilliant way to get children thinking about food waste and recycling in a way that felt fun and meaningful. Seeing their ideas brought to life on a real truck has given them a genuine sense of pride and excitement about looking after the environment.”
The newly named vehicles are expected to help raise awareness of the service as they travel through Southampton’s streets in the coming weeks.
The names will be added to the food waste fleet in the coming weeks.
