A 27-year-old white Shetland pony called Katie has made a rather unusual new friend near Chichester.
She was spotted in a field in Halnaker with a rook gently standing on her back, in a moment that has delighted onlookers.
Footage shows the bird carefully taking small pieces of hair from Katie’s coat, possibly to use as nesting material. Katie appeared completely relaxed throughout, seemingly unbothered by her feathered visitor.
Rather than shaking the rook off or walking away, the pony stayed calm as the bird perched on her back and helped itself to a little bit of natural insulation.
It is a small but charming example of how animals can sometimes form unexpected connections in the countryside. While it may not be quite friendship in the human sense, the pair appeared perfectly comfortable in each other’s company.
Animal experts often say these moments can happen when both creatures benefit in some way, or when one animal simply tolerates another without feeling threatened. In Katie’s case, the rook may have found a soft and useful source of nest lining, while Katie seemed happy enough to let the visitor get on with the job.
Unusual animal partnerships have been seen across the world. Dogs and ducks have been known to become companions on farms, cats have been filmed curling up with rabbits, and horses often form close bonds with goats, donkeys or even chickens.
For now, Katie and the rook have provided a lovely local moment from Halnaker.
