A number of schools across the South are closed today, while others are finishing early as extreme heat affects the region.
The Met Office has issued a red extreme heat warning for inland parts of the area, in what is being described as an unprecedented move.
The warning is in place until at least 9 o’clock tomorrow evening, with forecasters warning that temperatures could become dangerously high.
Coastal areas are covered by an amber warning, but conditions are still expected to be extremely hot, with health officials urging people to take extra care.
Parents are being advised to check directly with their child’s school for the latest information on closures, early finishes and any changes to transport arrangements.
The heat is expected to cause disruption throughout the day, particularly for vulnerable people, including older residents, young children and those with existing health conditions.
Health officials are reminding people to carry water with them, drink regularly and avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
People are also being urged to wear sunscreen, cover up where possible and look out for neighbours, friends and relatives who may be more at risk in the hot weather.

There are also warnings for pet owners.
Animal charities say dogs should not be walked on hot pavements, as the surface can quickly become hot enough to burn their paws.
Owners are being advised to walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening, when temperatures are lower, and to make sure animals have access to shade and fresh water.

The public is also being reminded never to leave dogs in cars during warm weather, even for a short time.
The advice from officials is to plan ahead, stay hydrated and take the heat seriously while the warnings remain in place.
