People heading to the coast across the South are being warned about the risk of cold water shock as temperatures remain high.
An amber weather warning for extreme heat remains in place for Sussex and Hampshire until Thursday night, with many people expected to visit beaches, rivers and lakes to cool off.
A red warning is also due to begin on Wednesday morning for inland areas in the north of the region, where the heat is expected to be at its most intense.
The RNLI says open water can still be dangerous, even during very hot weather. While the air temperature may feel extremely warm, the sea, rivers and lakes can remain much colder than expected.
Cold water shock can affect breathing and movement, especially if someone jumps or dives straight into the water. The charity is urging people to enter the water gradually, avoid jumping in, and use lifeguarded beaches or supervised swimming areas where possible.
Anyone who gets into difficulty in the water should float on their back, keep their airway clear, and try to remain calm. If someone else is in trouble, people should call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard at the coast, or the fire service if inland.
The warning comes as emergency services prepare for increased pressure during the heatwave, with coastal areas across Sussex and Hampshire expected to be busy.
People are also being reminded to take basic precautions in the heat, including drinking plenty of water, wearing sunscreen, staying in the shade where possible, and avoiding the strongest sun during the middle of the day.
Those heading out are advised to plan ahead, check local conditions before travelling, and keep an eye on children, older people and anyone who may be more vulnerable in extreme heat.
The RNLI says taking a few simple steps could help prevent a day out from turning into an emergency.
