A Fareham special school is celebrating after receiving national recognition for its work supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH).
King’s Academy Lord Wilson in Sarisbury Green has been named a 2026 Silver Winner in the Pearson National Teaching Awards for SEND and Inclusive Practice.
Headteacher Nigel Matthias described the award as a proud achievement for the whole school community.
He said: “I’m absolutely delighted that King’s Academy Lord Wilson has been recognised with a national teaching award for SEND and inclusive practice.
“This is the highest level of recognition for a special school like ours, and I’m delighted for our staff, students and wider community.”
The school supports 62 boys with SEMH needs, many of whom have faced challenges in previous educational settings. More than 80 per cent of pupils are eligible for free school meals.
Mr Matthias said the school is committed to helping every student succeed, regardless of their past experiences.
He said: “Many of our young people come to us having struggled in other schools, and some have been excluded. We believe every pupil who comes here has the opportunity to succeed.”
Last year, the school achieved some of the strongest GCSE results among special schools nationally.
Mr Matthias said the award recognised the school’s efforts to remove barriers to achievement and raise aspirations for its pupils.
Chair of Governors Richard Thomas described the award as “a monumental achievement” and praised staff for their dedication to supporting young people.
The school has also been shortlisted for TES Specialist Provision School of the Year, with the winner due to be announced on Friday.
