Residents have just days left to apply for a role helping decide how much councillors in Worthing and Adur receive in allowances.

The Joint Independent Remuneration Panel (JIRP) is looking for new members, with applications closing on Monday, August 17.

Government regulations require all councillors’ allowances to be assessed by an independent panel, made up of four members of the public who are not councillors or staff.

Councillors receive an annual basic allowance. In 2025/26 this was around £5,902.80 for Adur and £6,183.36 for Worthing. They may also be entitled to special responsibility allowances, such as those chairing committees, and travel and carers allowances.

A spokesperson for the councils said: ‘The role is a great opportunity to get involved in local democracy and would be perfect for people with sound judgement and good analytical skills, who can offer an unbiased and impartial approach.’

Applicants must be available to attend up to five meetings per year and will receive £75 per meeting and the chair of the panel will receive £100 per meeting.
