Eleven students from Crawley College have completed the latest IGNITE course run by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
The programme is designed to help young people build personal resilience, boost their wellbeing, strengthen relationships, and contribute to healthier communities.
Over several weeks, the 16 to 18-year-olds took part in a wide range of firefighter-style exercises and activities, all aimed at developing their social and emotional skills and preparing them for life beyond college.
Their achievements were celebrated at a special pass-out parade on Friday, 5 December, held at Crawley Fire Station in front of proud family members and the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Dr Tim Fooks.
Station Manager James Mcgrath attended the event and presented the young people with their certificates.
Speaking after the event, he said: “It was fantastic to meet our latest IGNITE students and watch them demonstrate their new skills.
“Over the course of the week they have taken part in drill yard skills such as running hoses, teambuilding challenges, first aid workshops, and communications activities.
“They have all worked really hard and should be proud of everything they have achieved.”
Councillor Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Community Support, Fire and Rescue, said: “I would like to congratulate the young people who completed the IGNITE course. I hope it has provided them with a valuable insight into the fire and rescue service and may inspire them to consider a career within the fire and rescue service.”
