Drivers are being warned to expect continued delays on key routes between the A27 and Bognor Regis, as flooding continues to cause disruption across the area.
The A29 through Shripney remains closed after further flooding, with more rain expected throughout the day. West Sussex Highways says the closure is down to the Aldingbourne Rife, which is already full. The rife carries water away from the village, but with water levels at capacity, there is nowhere for floodwater to drain. Highways teams say pumping water off the road would be ineffective, as it would quickly be replaced by runoff from surrounding land and the rife itself.
The situation is being made worse by ongoing unsettled weather. The Met Office has a yellow weather warning in place for heavy rain until nine o’clock this evening, with further showers expected over the coming days. While there may be some drier spells, conditions are likely to remain changeable, keeping flood risk high on already saturated ground.
Motorists are being advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and check for the latest travel updates before setting off. Drivers should never attempt to drive through floodwater, as it can be deeper than it appears and may conceal hazards beneath the surface. Even shallow water can cause vehicles to lose control or stall.
Residents are also being encouraged to take simple steps to stay safe during wet weather. These include clearing leaves from drains and gutters where safe to do so, securing outdoor items that could be damaged or washed away, and keeping an eye on vulnerable neighbours. Pedestrians should take care near fast-flowing water and avoid walking through flooded areas.
With more rain in the forecast for the Bognor Regis area over the next week, disruption is likely to continue, and drivers are urged to remain cautious and patient on the roads.
