Health chiefs across the South are warning that the NHS is heading into an unprecedented flu season, with hospitals already under severe strain from winter pressures.

According to the latest NHS England figures, an average of 2,660 patients a day were in hospital with flu last week – a sharp rise of 55 per cent in just seven days. It marks the highest number of flu-related hospitalisations at this point in the year since records began.

In West Sussex, public health leaders are urging people to get their flu jab before the festive season, amid growing concern that pressures already felt in emergency departments could escalate further. Officials say vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against the virus and reduce the likelihood of serious illness.

The call is particularly directed at those at higher risk, including over-65s, pregnant women, young children and people living with long-term health conditions such as diabetes, respiratory illness or heart disease. Eligible groups can receive a free flu vaccination at their GP practice or participating pharmacies. Appointments can also be booked through the NHS website, the NHS App, by calling 119 or by contacting local GP services directly. Those not eligible for a free jab can still purchase one from selected pharmacies.

Councillor Bob Lanzer, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "It’s important to keep ourselves well during the colder months with a number of winter viruses circulating and when we naturally spend more time indoors. If you’re eligible for a free flu vaccine, please take up the offer as soon as possible. Acting now will help protect you and your loved ones through the festive season and help protect our health and social care services, as it takes around two weeks to become fully effective.”

Alison Challenger, West Sussex Director of Public Health, said: "The flu is a debilitating illness which can have potentially serious consequences for those in high-risk groups, including people with long-term conditions such as diabetes, respiratory conditions, neurological diseases and heart, kidney and liver disease. A significant number of our residents who are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination have taken up the offer already. The flu vaccine is still the best protection for you and those around you. If you haven’t had yours yet, now is the time to act and build your immunity.”
