The council is to discuss plans for 33 external self-storage units at New Wharf, off Brighton Road, at a meeting of its planning committee on Monday, September 8.

The plans, submitted by Cinch Self Storage in May, would see the new units installed along the perimeter of the site, surrounding a warehouse also set to be used by Cinch as a self-storage facility, according to approved plans from April.

The warehouse was previously vacant from June 2024 according to council officers, with work underway on April plans to re-clad the warehouse to be fit for use by Cinch.

Each external unit would be a grey cladded box with a flat roof and blue doors, standing at 2.4 metres high with 13sqm of floor space.

From the original application the number of units proposed dropped from 35 to 33, to set the development back from Brighton Road.

The plans would also see reconfiguration to the parking, with 12 parking spaces to be provided for the site, with the previous use of the external area being a service yard for domestic and heavy goods vehicles.

So far, one objection has been received by the council from a resident saying they were concerned about noise pollution if the units were open 24/7, asking if the plans could restrict hours of use to between 8am to 8pm.

In the plans, architects for Cinch, S+SA Architects Ltd, said the new units would ‘better utilise’ the site and increase perimeter security, saying ‘a more modern and convenient storage operation outside the building footprint, allows for ease of access for customers.’

Previous plans for New Wharf were approved by the committee in December 2023, for up to 62 flats across eight stories, including underground parking and demolition of the existing warehouse.

The planning committee meeting is open to the public and will take place at 6:30pm on Monday, September 8,  at the Shoreham Centre, Shoreham.
