Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery has announced it has secured a £249,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to transform its gallery spaces for a major new exhibition marking the city’s centenary.
The funding will allow the museum to redevelop its ground floor galleries and one first-floor gallery, creating a more inspiring and welcoming environment for a new exhibition titled Portsmouth100 – Your Museum, Your Stories, Your City.
The project will see a series of new displays created in collaboration with local communities, reflecting Portsmouth’s last 100 years. By uncovering lesser-known stories and amplifying a wide range of voices, the exhibition aims to strengthen the city’s sense of place and identity.
Museum staff will work closely with community groups to shape the displays, ensuring the story of Portsmouth is told in a way that is accessible, relevant and representative of the people who live there.
The new exhibition forms part of Portsmouth100, a year-long programme of events taking place in 2026 to mark 100 years since Portsmouth was officially granted city status. Celebrations will run across the city, highlighting its heritage, culture and community.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players the museum service will be able to update its galleries to ensure the history of Portsmouth can be told for future generations.”
The National Lottery Heritage Fund said the project is being made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, enabling a new exhibition alongside extensive community engagement work.
Portsmouth100 – Your Museum, Your Stories, Your City will create two major exhibition displays across the museum’s main ground floor galleries. As part of the centenary celebrations, it is expected to attract new audiences, including residents and visitors, while building lasting partnerships across the city.
