A new Public Spaces Protection Order has been introduced in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis to help tackle alcohol-related nuisance and antisocial behaviour.
The order came into force on 1 April 2026 and applies to designated public spaces in the two towns.
The council says the PSPO is aimed at ensuring residents, visitors and businesses can enjoy public areas without disruption linked to alcohol misuse or antisocial behaviour.
Under the order, authorised officers and police officers have the power to ask anyone behaving antisocially to stop what they are doing or leave the area. Alcohol may also be confiscated where necessary.
Anyone who fails to comply with a request from an authorised officer or police officer could be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100, or face prosecution.
Carrie Reynolds, Acting Group Head of Wellbeing and Communities, said:
“This Public Spaces Protection Order is in place to ensure that everyone who lives or visits the towns of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis can enjoy a safe and welcoming environment.
“By asking individuals to stop drinking or modify their behaviour, authorised officers can provide support and prevent situations from escalating, The council’s priority is to work with people, offer guidance, and help resolve issues in a constructive way. The PSPO is an additional tool to help protect the wellbeing of our communities and maintain a safe and friendly environment that people rightly expect.”
The council says the change is supported by a public consultation and reports of alcohol-related incidents in public places.
It will continue working closely with police to make sure the PSPO is implemented effectively across Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.
