Voters across the South are heading to the polls today for local elections in West Sussex, East Sussex and Hampshire.
Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm, with residents being urged to check where they need to vote before setting off. Anyone voting in person in England must bring an accepted form of photo ID, such as a passport, driving licence, older person’s bus pass, disabled person’s bus pass, biometric immigration document or a free Voter Authority Certificate.
People do not need their polling card to vote, although taking it can help polling station staff. Voters must attend their allocated polling station, based on the address where they are registered. Anyone in the queue by 10pm will still be allowed to cast their vote.
Those who arranged a postal vote should make sure it is returned in time. If it is too late to post, completed postal vote packs can be taken to a polling station before 10pm, although voters may need to complete a return form when handing them in. People who arranged a proxy vote will have someone they trust vote on their behalf.
In Hampshire, voters are choosing councillors across all 76 county council divisions. Hampshire County Council is responsible for major local services including roads, transport, schools, social care, libraries and waste disposal.
In West Sussex, 70 county councillors are being elected to represent local divisions of around 12,000 residents each. The council says those elected will take decisions on policy and spending and will be accountable to residents.
In East Sussex, county council elections are also taking place today. County councillors help make decisions on services including highways, education, adult social care, children’s services and community support.
