Weald School in Billingshurst is set to receive up to £2.6 million from the county council to fund a major redevelopment project.
Its underused canteen will be demolished and replaced with a new two-storey facility featuring an activity studio, an ICT suite, and a range of other spaces for students and staff.
The funding, was approved on June 16 by West Sussex County Council’s service director for property and assets. These funds are provided by developers as part of planning agreements and are allocated to projects such as education, transport and affordable housing.
According to council documents, the school identified the redevelopment as its highest priority.
A report presented to the council stated that creating new spaces and refurbished teaching spaces, would provide the greatest benefit to pupils across the school, including those in the sixth form.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, if the project goes ahead as planned, the new building will include two dark rooms, changing facilities, offices, a group room and new lavatories. The scheme will also involve the remodelling of surrounding areas to create more effective learning and activity spaces.
The decision can still be called in for further discussion by councillors until June 25.
However, if no concerns are raised, work on the redevelopment is expected to move forward using the approved funds.
