Storm Chandra is forecast to bring heavy rain and unsettled conditions across southern England today.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Sussex and Hampshire, which remains in force until midday. Forecasters say the storm is expected to bring periods of persistent and sometimes heavy rain, increasing the risk of localised flooding.
Areas most at risk include low-lying land, places near rivers, and locations with poor drainage, where surface water could build up quickly. The Met Office says some communities may experience flooding of roads and properties, while fast-flowing water could make driving conditions hazardous.
The Environment Agency says there are several flood warnings across the South. In Sussex the alerts include the Western Rother around Midhurst, the Lower Arun at Pulborough, the River Adur West Branch between Coolham and Henfield, and Langney Haven in Eastbourne. In Hampshire, Lower River Ems in Emsworth, River Alver in Lee-on-The-Solent, Eastern Yar near Sandown, and groundwarer flooding in Hambledon. There is also a risk of disruption to transport networks. Motorists are being urged to take extra care, allow more time for journeys, and be prepared for possible road closures. Public transport services, including rail and bus routes, may also face delays if flooding or poor conditions affect infrastructure.
Storm Chandra follows a period of unsettled winter weather, with saturated ground increasing the likelihood of further impacts. While conditions are expected to ease later today, forecasters warn that further showers could follow behind the main band of rain.
