Arun District Council has confirmed its commitment to reopening and securing the long-term future of the Alexandra Theatre in Bognor Regis.
Councillors have approved a package of financial support for the venue’s future operators.
The theatre will be run through a partnership between Arun Arts and the Guildhall Trust, combining community leadership with specialist venue expertise.
Following recommendations from the Policy and Resources Committee, Full Council approved a structured package of financial support to assist Arun Arts during the transition into the new venue and the early years of operation. As part of this approval, Arun Arts will submit an updated business plan, reflecting the scale, ambition and operating model of the redeveloped theatre. This package includes:
- up to £50,000 in 2025/26 to support technical input during the final stages of construction
- £250,000 in the first year following reopening
- £170,000 in the second year
- £140,000 in the third year
This investment will enable the operator to build audiences, develop a high-quality and inclusive cultural offer, and ensure the theatre is well positioned for long-term sustainability.
Cllr Martin Lury, Leader of Arun District Council said: “The council is committed to supporting the regeneration of Bognor Regis town centre and the rejuvenation of the much-loved Alexandra Theatre is a vital part of this investment.
“The Full Council decision confirms our continued commitment to the people, partnerships and ambition needed to make the new Alexandra Theatre a vibrant, welcoming and successful venue for the whole community. Supporting Arun Arts and their partnership with The Guildhall Trust is a key part of delivering that vision.”
The council has also agreed to enter into a new lease with Arun Arts for the operation of the theatre, with officers delegated to finalise the detailed terms and funding arrangements in line with legal and procurement advice. Where appropriate, the initial year of support will be provided in the form of a grant.
Kate Bennett, Chair of Trustees at Arun Arts, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Arun District Council for this three-year commitment. This partnership is fundamental to our ability to reopen the Alexandra Theatre with confidence and ambition. Together, we are creating a venue that will bring exceptional live entertainment to Bognor Regis, while remaining deeply rooted in and responsive to the community it serves.”
