Police in Portsmouth are urging residents to remain vigilant following a series of reports involving attempted vehicle thefts, thefts from cars and attempted burglaries in the Hilsea and Copnor areas.
Officers say they are currently receiving reports of suspicious activity involving vehicles, sheds and garages, prompting a warning to people living in the affected neighbourhoods.
Residents are being encouraged to take extra precautions to protect their property, particularly by ensuring vehicles are securely locked whenever they are left unattended.
Police are also advising homeowners to check the security of sheds and garages, which can be attractive targets for thieves looking for bicycles, tools and other valuable equipment.
Anyone who has noticed suspicious behaviour in the area is being urged to report it to the police.
Officers are particularly interested in hearing from residents who may have CCTV, video doorbell or dashcam footage showing suspicious activity.
Such footage could help investigators identify those responsible and establish whether the reported incidents are connected.
Police have not confirmed how many incidents have been reported or whether any arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary on 101, quoting reference number 44260518316.
Residents can also report non-emergency incidents online through the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary website.
Police have issued the following advice to help residents reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime:
-
Always lock your vehicle, even when leaving it unattended for a short period.
-
Remove valuables from cars, including bags, wallets and electronic devices.
-
Make sure sheds and garages are secured with suitable locks.
-
Check CCTV and doorbell camera footage for suspicious activity.
-
Report suspicious behaviour to police on 101, or call 999 if a crime is taking place or someone is in immediate danger.
