An 83-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering his nephew following a two-week trial at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Alan Wotton was convicted by a jury of killing 65-year-old Andrew Avery at a property in Exmouth Road, Gosport, in November 2024.

Police were called to the address at around 5.20pm on Friday 29 November after the fire service reported that a blaze had been deliberately started inside the house.

Mr Avery was found in the lounge suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Emergency crews carried him from the property, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was later charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

His trial at Portsmouth Crown Court began on Monday 17 August.

A jury found Wotton guilty of murder on Tuesday 1 September.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to return to Portsmouth Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday 22 October.
