The MP for Chichester has written to David Wilson Homes after learning that open days were being advertised at the Fossil Bay development in Earnley, despite a stop notice remaining in force.
Jess Brown-Fuller said she was shocked to discover the developer had advertised open days at the Clappers Lane site, where occupation of the properties is currently prevented until sewage capacity issues have been resolved.
The MP said one resident who enquired about the development was told occupation could begin just four to six weeks later.
She has since been reassured by Chichester District Council that the stop notice remains in place.
In her letter to David Wilson Homes, Brown-Fuller warned that developers should not pre-empt planning decisions. She said both existing and future residents need confidence that local infrastructure can support the development, and said there is currently no evidence to support that.
She also said that developers must respect the planning process and that residents need to see stop notices complied with in full.
Brown-Fuller has asked David Wilson Homes to clarify what work has been carried out to address the sewage capacity issues. She has also asked whether a firm date has been set for the Fossil Bay development to be discussed at a planning committee.
A spokesperson for David Wilson Homes said: “We have been working hard to install a package of drainage measures including additional on-site foul water storage and new monitoring technology to manage the sewer capacity.
“All of the new drainage is operational, and Southern Water has confirmed there is now sufficient sewerage capacity within the network for the development.
“Based on this we consider all our planning requirements have now been satisfied and that sales can re-start at Fossil Bay.”
