West Sussex Fire and Rescue have been called out this afternoon to a fire on the busy A27 between Boxgrove and Fontwell.
The incident started at around 1:30 pm after reports of a fire on verge area beside the road.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called at 1.26pm this afternoon to reports of a fire involving the verge on the A27 eastbound between Boxgrove and Fontwell.
“Joint Fire Control mobilised two fire engines to the scene. Upon arrival firefighters found that the small fire had already been extinguished and there was no further firefighting action required.
“The combination of soaring temperatures and prolonged dry weather significantly increases the risk of wildfires, which can spread rapidly and cause damage to homes, countryside, wildlife and local communities.
“With further warm weather forecast into the weekend, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging all residents to take extra care to minimise the risk of a fire breaking out.”
People can help reduce the risk of accidentally starting a fire by following this advice:
- Allow disposable barbecues to cool completely before pouring water over them and disposing of them safely.
- Make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished and discarded responsibly.
- Position barbecues on a stable, flat surface, well away from trees, bushes, fences and sheds.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby in case of an emergency.
- Keep glass bottles, mirrors and other reflective items out of direct sunlight.
- Take litter home and dispose of all waste responsibly.
- Consider having a picnic instead of using a barbecue.
- Move to a safe location and call 999 immediately if you discover a fire.
