Young people from St Vincent’s College in Gosport have been given an insight into careers in Esports during a visit to the University of Chichester.
The students toured the university’s new Esports Performance Room, a state-of-the-art facility used by undergraduates studying the BA (Hons) Esports degree. The visit was designed to give sixth-form students considering a future in Esports the opportunity to see how the rapidly growing industry is taught and supported at university level.
Esports has become a global phenomenon, generating an estimated 1.96 billion dollars worldwide last year. The industry offers a wide range of career opportunities beyond professional gaming, including team management, event production, coaching, sports science, psychology and performance analysis.
The Esports Performance Room, powered by SCAN UK, is a central part of the university’s Esports programme. It allows students to develop performance-based skills through teaching sessions, in-house events and competitive play. Students regularly take part in organised competitions, including the National Student Esports League.
The visit formed part of the University of Chichester’s outreach work, aimed at helping local college students explore potential future career paths. The bespoke College Outreach Programme, created by Esports lecturer Lee Cumbers, provides opportunities for college and university students to compete, collaborate and take part in student-led Esports events.
Lee Cumbers, Lecturer in Esports and Esports Psychology at the University of Chichester, said the visit had been a success. He thanked third-year Esports students and staff for supporting the day, as well as colleagues from St Vincent’s College, and said he looked forward to welcoming the students back in the future, along with other local colleges.
SCAN UK says it is pleased to support the new facilities and is looking ahead to helping finalise the performance room’s design.
