Newport heritage attractions to open free as part of Heritage Open Days

The Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa will both offer free entry on special dates this September as part of Heritage Open Days, giving residents and visitors the chance to explore more of the Isle of Wight’s past.

Two of Newport’s best-known heritage attractions are opening free of charge this month as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days celebrations.

The Isle of Wight Heritage Service is offering free entry to the Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa on separate dates in September.

The first event takes place at the Museum of Island History, inside Newport’s historic Guildhall, on Saturday 12 September from 10am until 1pm.

Visitors will be able to explore displays covering the Island’s history from prehistoric times through to the present day.

The opening will form part of a wider programme of Heritage Day activities taking place across Newport town centre.

One of the highlights will be an immersive theatre walk celebrating the life and work of poet Charlotte Mew, created by StoneCrabs Theatre.

The guided experience will begin at 11am at the Yellowfin Propeller opposite Quay Arts before taking participants around Newport as Mew’s story is brought to life through performance.

The walk will finish with a special presentation and visit to the Museum of Island History.

Entry to the museum is free and does not require booking, although tickets for the Charlotte Mew theatre walk cost £10 and must be reserved in advance.

Rachel Tait, museum curator, said: "Heritage Open Days gives people a wonderful opportunity to connect with the Island's fascinating history and heritage completely free of charge.

"Whether you're discovering the Museum of Island History for the first time or stepping into the story of Charlotte Mew through this unique theatrical experience, there's something for everyone to enjoy."

A week later, Newport Roman Villa in Cypress Road will open free of charge on Saturday 19 September between 10am and 2pm.

The site gives visitors the chance to explore the remains of a third-century Roman farmhouse, first discovered 100 years ago in 1926.

Features include a preserved Roman bath suite, a hypocaust heating system and a Roman-style garden.

Free guided tours led by heritage experts will take place at 10.30am, 11.15am, noon and 12.45pm.

Visitors will also be able to explore the villa independently throughout the day.

Councillor Julie Jones-Evans, chair of the council's economy, regeneration, transport and infrastructure committee, said: "These free events are a fantastic way for people of all ages to discover the stories that have shaped the Isle of Wight.

"From the treasures held within our Museum of Island History to the remarkable remains at Newport Roman Villa, Heritage Open Days showcases the importance of preserving and celebrating our unique heritage."

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture, with thousands of organisations and volunteers taking part each September.
