Residents and their families at Westergate House in Fontwell enjoyed an afternoon of puppetry and prosecco when Shakespeare’s Globe brought a little theatrical magic into their home.
The special event was streamed live from the famous London theatre and hosted by the Globe’s Education Facilitator, Hal Chambers.
Hal guided residents through the fascinating history of puppetry, using images from the Globe’s production of Pinocchio, in which the title character was portrayed by a puppet.
The virtual workshop also explored the use of puppets in theatre and television, as well as the considerable skill involved in creating realistic characters and making them appear to come to life.
Residents then had the opportunity to pull a few strings of their own as the workshop moved from theatre history to a practical demonstration.
Hal showed participants how to make simple puppets using newspaper before teaching them how to manoeuvre their creations and give them convincing movements.
The event happened to coincide with National Prosecco Day, providing the perfect excuse for residents and their families to sample some bubbly while learning about the history and craft of puppetry.
Paul Middleton-Russell said: “We have had a super afternoon at Westergate House; an amazing insight into the working of puppets and the importance of their history. We were astonished to learn origins lie in ancient civilisations!
“Our live streamed events are always very popular, and provide opportunity for our residents to learn about a diverse range of topics in history, art and culture.”
