Artists, curators and filmmakers from across the globe will gather in Brighton for a major international conference exploring how migration, mobility and belonging are shaping modern art and culture.
The event, titled ‘Art that Moves’, is curated by University of Brighton academic and artist Dr Lucia King. It will bring together leading creative voices to examine how movement between cultures, countries and communities is influencing the production, exhibition and understanding of art in the 21st century.
The conference will take place at the University of Brighton City campus on Thursday 23 April. It forms part of a wider week-long programme spanning both the University of Brighton and Central Saint Martins in London.
The programme will include talks, film screenings, workshops and a pop-up exhibition, all designed to explore ideas around belonging, displacement and cultural re-framing.
Through film, visual presentations and discussion, ‘Art that Moves’ will highlight the personal, political and emotional realities behind migration. Organisers say it will also encourage audiences to consider how stories of human connection in the age of Artificial Intelligence influence the way art is created and understood in an increasingly connected world.
A number of internationally recognised figures are set to take part. These include award-winning Danish Trinidadian artist Jeannette Ehler, whose work explores race, colonialism and Black history in Denmark, and Alessio Antoniolli, Director of the Triangle Network.
The programme also features London-based filmmaker Parwana Haydar, whose work focuses on memory and the Afghan diaspora, alongside artist Whiskey Chow, who explores queer Southeast Asian diasporic perspectives.
