West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has renewed its appeal for people to help prevent wildfires as extreme heat and prolonged dry weather continue across the county.
The service says the risk of fires breaking out in the countryside is exceptionally high, with dry grass and vegetation allowing flames to spread rapidly.
Residents and visitors are being urged not to use disposable barbecues in open spaces, including parks, woodland and other areas of countryside.
People are also being reminded to dispose of cigarettes safely and responsibly, as discarded smoking materials can easily ignite dry ground.
Empty bottles and other glass should be taken home rather than left outside, where they can pose a fire risk in strong sunlight.
Firefighters say wildfires can cause widespread damage to wildlife habitats, threaten nearby homes and communities and place significant pressure on emergency services.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it only takes one spark to start a wildfire and called on everyone to play their part in preventing fires before they begin.
