BREAKING NEWS: Two people seriously injured after Southern passenger train derails near Lewes railway station

Two people have been seriously injured after passenger train derailed close to Lewes railway station, prompting a major emergency response.

A Southern service is believed to be involved in the incident, which happened shortly before 4pm on Thursday, 13 August.

British Transport Police said officers were called at 3.54pm following reports that a train had come off the tracks.

In a statement, the force said: “Officers are currently on scene close to Lewes railway station following reports of a derailed train at 3.54pm today (13 August 2026).

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service at 7pm said: “We are continuing to respond to a major incident following a train derailment near Lewes Railway Station this afternoon.

“Ambulance crews, specialist responders and colleagues from partner emergency services remain at the scene. There were approximately 150 people on board the train at the time of the incident.

“At this stage, we can confirm that two patients have sustained serious injuries and a further nine patients have sustained less serious injuries.

“Patients have been assessed and treated at the scene, with some transported to local hospitals for further treatment and care.

“A number of passengers who did not require hospital treatment have been taken to a local community centre, where they are being supported by partner agencies.

“This remains a complex and ongoing multi-agency response. Our priority continues to be providing care to those affected and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

“We would ask the public to avoid the area where possible and allow emergency services to continue their work.”

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she was “deeply concerned” by reports of the derailment and thanked the emergency services supporting those affected. She said the Government was working with the rail industry and local organisations to assist passengers. 

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received its first call at 3.55pm.

Its statement said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been called to an incident near Lewes train station.

“Other emergencies services have also been alerted.

“Please avoid the area.

“UPDATE 4.30pm: We can confirm we were called at 3.55pm to reports that a train had derailed just outside Lewes.

“We are working with other emergency services at the scene.

“Further updates will be given around 5pm.

“UPDATE 5pm: We continue to work at the scene alongside our emergency service colleagues and other partners.

“Please avoid the area.”

Paramedics, British Transport Police, Sussex Police and firefighters are attending the incident.

All railway lines through Lewes have been closed to allow emergency crews to carry out their work.

Southern Railway said trains were unable to run through the area, with major disruption expected until around 10pm.

Passengers have been strongly advised to travel later if possible. Those who are already travelling or have to make their journey should use an alternative route and allow at least an additional hour.

Services between Brighton, Lewes, Eastbourne and Seaford are expected to be cancelled, delayed or altered while the lines remain closed.

At this stage, the emergency services have not released confirmed information about injuries, the number of people aboard the train or what caused it to derail.

People are being asked to avoid the area surrounding Lewes railway station while the emergency response continues.
