West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to Ash Keys, in the Southgate area of the town, shortly before 2.45pm on Monday.
The incident was initially reported as a fire involving four properties, but the fire service later confirmed that ten properties had been affected altogether.
Eight fire engines were sent to the scene as crews worked to bring the blaze under control and prevent it spreading further.
People living nearby were asked to avoid the area and keep their doors and windows closed.
Around 130 properties were also reportedly left without electricity during the incident.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
The fire service said the Fire Severity Index remains very high across West Sussex following the prolonged spell of warm and dry weather.
People are being urged to avoid disposable barbecues and outdoor bonfires, extinguish cigarettes properly and call 999 immediately if they see signs of a fire.
