Hosepipe restrictions begin on Isle of Wight and parts of Hampshire

People living on the Isle of Wight and in parts of Hampshire face hosepipe restrictions from today as dry weather continues to put pressure on water supplies.

Southern Water says river levels are around 25% lower than expected following the warmest spring on record and a recent spell of extreme heat.

The restrictions mean customers in affected areas are being asked not to use hosepipes for activities such as watering gardens, filling paddling pools or washing cars.

South East Water also has hosepipe restrictions in place for customers in Kent, but Portsmouth Water says there are currently no restrictions for its customers in West Sussex and South East Hampshire.

Tips for saving water

Simple ways to save water include using a watering can and watering plants early in the morning or late in the evening.

Take shorter showers, turn off the taps while brushing your teeth, and run the washing machine and dishwasher only with full loads.

Motorists should also also avoid washing cars unless necessary.
