Man charged following fatal M23 collision in West Sussex

A 38-year-old man has been charged following a serious collision on the M23 in West Sussex.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the M23 at Junction 9 at Crawley just prior to 01:00 on Wednesday (09/07/2026) after a van collided with a highway’s worker.

A 65-year-old man from Kent died at the scene.

The driver of the van, Vilius Domarkas of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Yesterday Domarkas appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court and and was remanded into custody until he is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 6 August.

Detective Sergeant Rob Baldwin said: “We are continuing to support the victim’s family following this tragic incident.

“The investigation remains ongoing, and we continue to encourage anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has relevant information including dashcam footage to come forward.”
