A new sign highlighting the dangers of food allergies has been installed at Hotham Park in Bognor Regis as part of efforts to make public play areas safer and more inclusive.
The sign features artwork created by Esmee, a Year Five pupil at St Philip’s Catholic Primary School in Arundel, following a competition for local schoolchildren.
Visitors to the park are being encouraged to eat away from the play equipment, put their rubbish in bins and clean their hands before using the playground. The measures are intended to reduce the risk of food residue being left on equipment.
Arun District Council has worked with Natasha’s Foundation, the UK’s food allergy charity, on the initiative.
Food allergies affect millions of people across the UK, including an estimated one in 13 children.
Natasha’s Foundation was founded by Tanya and Nadim Ednan-Laperouse OBEs following the death of their 15-year-old daughter Natasha from a severe allergic reaction to sesame.
The charity provides schools with free training and practical resources through its Allergy School educational programme. It also campaigns on behalf of people affected by food allergies and funds clinical research aimed at improving treatment and prevention.
Councillor Amanda Worne, Chair of Environment Committee said: "Food allergies can have a serious impact on people's lives, particularly for children and their families. Jess North, who was just 20, tragically died of a nut allergy on 14 May 2021 and these new signs are dedicated to her memory.
"We are proud to be working with Natasha's Foundation to promote understanding and create safer, more inclusive public spaces. The new sign at Hotham Park is a fantastic way to highlight this important issue, and I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the competition and helped bring this initiative to life."
