A red wildfire-risk warning has been issued across the Arun district as continuing dry conditions leave beaches and green spaces vulnerable to rapidly spreading fires.
The warning will apply on Wednesday, 12 August and Thursday, 13 August. Arun District Council said there was an exceptionally high risk of fires starting and spreading quickly during this period.
Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid barbecues, fire pits and all other open flames, whether they are on the beach, in a park, in the countryside, at home or staying at a campsite.
Barbecues are not permitted on any of Arun’s beaches. The council said the current conditions meant everyone needed to play their part in protecting communities, wildlife and the district’s open spaces.
People are also being reminded never to discard cigarettes or matches on the ground. All litter should be taken home or placed in a suitable bin, particularly glass bottles, which can increase the risk of a fire.
The warning follows a prolonged period of hot and dry weather, which has left grassland, woodland and other vegetation particularly vulnerable. Officials said even a small spark could develop into a serious wildfire.
Anyone who sees smoke or flames should move to a safe location and call 999 immediately rather than attempting to tackle the fire themselves.
Callers should provide the fire service with as much information as possible, including the location and estimated size of the fire. An address, nearby landmark or What3Words location could help emergency crews find the incident more quickly.
People living near areas vulnerable to wildfires are also being encouraged to prepare in advance by checking official safety advice and considering what they would do if they were told to leave their homes.
Arun District Council has asked the public to remain vigilant throughout the warning period, stressing that prevention is the most effective way of avoiding a potentially devastating fire.
