West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is urging residents and visitors to take extra care outdoors as the South East experiences the UK’s third heatwave of the year.
An amber heat-health alert is in place until 9pm on 12 July, with temperatures forecast to exceed 30°C across parts of the region.
The fire service says the combination of high temperatures and prolonged dry weather significantly increases the risk of wildfires.
Wildfires can spread quickly and cause serious damage to homes, countryside, wildlife and local communities.
People are being asked to take simple steps to reduce the risk of accidentally starting a fire while enjoying the outdoors.
Disposable barbecues should be left to cool completely before being doused with water and disposed of safely.
Anyone using a barbecue should keep it well away from trees, shrubs, fences and sheds, and make sure it is placed on a stable, flat surface.
Residents are also being reminded to keep a bucket of water or sand nearby in case of emergency.
Cigarettes should be fully extinguished and disposed of responsibly, while glass bottles, mirrors and other reflective objects should be kept out of direct sunlight, as they can increase the risk of fires starting in dry conditions.
People heading to parks, beaches or countryside spots are also being urged to take litter home and dispose of waste responsibly.
Where possible, the fire service is encouraging people to choose a picnic instead of a barbecue during the hot and dry spell.
The heatwave also brings increased water safety risks, with more people expected to head to rivers, lakes and the coast to cool off.
Anyone who discovers a fire should move to a place of safety and call 999 immediately.
