Wildfire warning issued across the South as hot weather continues

A wildfire warning has been issued for large parts of southern England as the continuing hot and dry weather increases the risk of fires breaking out.

Natural England says conditions are particularly dangerous across areas of Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, where grassland, heathland and woodland have become increasingly dry.

The organisation’s fire severity information is used to assess how difficult a wildfire could be to control if one starts. Prolonged periods of warm weather, combined with little rainfall, can allow flames to spread rapidly through dry vegetation.

Fire and rescue services across the region are urging residents and visitors to take extra care while enjoying the countryside, parks and beaches.

People are being asked not to use disposable barbecues in woodland, on heathland or in other areas containing dry grass and vegetation. Bonfires and other outdoor fires should also be avoided while the risk remains high.

Smokers are being reminded to extinguish cigarettes properly and never throw them from vehicle windows. Glass bottles should not be left behind because they can potentially magnify sunlight and start fires in dry conditions.

Anyone who sees smoke, flames or a fire spreading in the open should move to a safe location and call 999 immediately. Callers should provide as much information as possible about the fire’s location and any nearby landmarks.
