Worthing Town Hall roof repairs cost thousands of pounds

Nearly £80,000 is being spent on repairs to the roof of Worthing Town Hall because of water leaks causing damage to its timber structure.

Worthing Borough Council has appointed Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd to undertake the first phase of repairs to the Grade II listed building’s roof coverings for £79,916, according to a council decision report.

The report says, there are currently two areas affected by leaks, one of which is the rolled lead sheet on the portico roof, which sits above the four pillars at the entrance.

It adds that the leaks have caused significant decay to the timber requiring some structural repairs, including the replacement of the timber valley rafter which will be subject to approval.

The document states that the other set of leaks are from the slate roof at south-west corner, which attaches to the council chamber. They are believed to be sourced from the existing cover flashings and the fixed roof light.

The council has proposed to replace the current lead sheet on the portico roof, strip back the Westmorland slates and replace the decaying timber, in order to mitigate against more damage.

At the south-west corner, the slates will be stripped back and waterproofing replaced. The council also plans to undertake a thorough inspection of the roof light.

The decision was made by the service director for operations and environmental services on August, 19, forming the first phase of repairs before work begins on the main part of the roof in the coming months.
