Plans to turn a former Homebase building in Chichester into a 55,000 sq ft Marks & Spencer store have been submitted to the district council.
If approved, the application for the site in Barnfield Drive will see the building and car park extended and reconfigured to house a full Marks & Spencer store, including a food hall, clothing and home departments.
In May, Marks & Spencer reported that, should this application be given the nod, its branches in North Street and Portfield Retail Park would close, with staff transferring to the new store.
The food hall in East Street would remain, although the company said it planned to update and invest in the store.
A statement submitted with the application described the proposal as a ‘high-quality and contextually responsive redevelopment’ that would enhance the ‘long-term vitality of the site’.
It added: “Marks & Spencer are proud to bring forward a new, brand-defining store that reflects the company’s commitment to quality, sustainability and innovation in retail design. The proposals will create an attractive, efficient and welcoming environment for customers and colleagues alike, while securing the site’s continued role as an important and sustainable retail destination for the local community.”
If all goes as planned, the new store is expected to open in the Spring of 2028.
