People are being reminded that BBQs are not permitted on any beaches in Arun, following several significant fires caused by beach barbecues.
Officials say most local residents are aware of the rule and follow it, but recent incidents have highlighted the serious risks posed when BBQs are used in areas where they are banned.
Fires can spread quickly, especially during warm, dry or windy weather, putting people at risk and causing damage to the local environment and seafront structures.
An image shared as part of the warning shows a damaged groyne on the beach in Felpham. Groynes are used to control drifting material and help reduce beach erosion, and are extremely expensive to replace.
Although BBQs are not allowed on Arun beaches, designated public BBQ areas are available nearby. These include West Green activity area in Littlehampton, near the water play area; Goring Gap in Ferring; and the green space next to the beach in Felpham.
Anyone using one of these areas is being urged to make sure their BBQ is fully extinguished and cold before disposing of it safely. Hot BBQs should never be placed in normal litter bins, as they can ignite and cause further fires.
Visitors are also being reminded to clear up after themselves by putting rubbish in a bin or taking it home.
People having BBQs at home are also being asked to take care. BBQs should be kept well away from fences, sheds and anything that could catch fire. They should never be left unattended, and children and pets should be kept at a safe distance.
BBQs should also be avoided in dry, windy conditions, and coals must be fully extinguished and cool before disposal.
