Firefighters remained at the scene of a large wildfire in Abbots Wood, Arlington, on Tuesday morning as crews continued to damp down several hot spots.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said its teams were still working at the woodland at 6.45am on 21 July, using flexi-packs, buckets of water and one jet to extinguish the remaining areas of heat.

The fire service was first called to Abbots Wood at 3.10pm on Monday, 20 July, following reports of a wildfire.

Eight fire appliances were initially sent to the scene, including crews from Hailsham, Eastbourne and Pevensey. Four-by-four vehicles from Seaford and Crowborough were also deployed, alongside Uckfield’s Dual Purpose Truck and Water Carrier.

Members of the public were urged to avoid Abbots Wood and the Robin Post Lane area while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

By 6.10pm, an area measuring approximately 600 metres by 200 metres, consisting of gorse and trees, was alight. Firefighters said they were making steady progress, while a police drone was used to assess the scale of the fire from above.

The response was later reduced to three fire engines, supported by the Dual Purpose Truck, Water Carrier and four-by-four vehicles.

A High Volume Pump was also brought in to supply water to the scene.

Police officers and forestry representatives worked alongside firefighters, while local farmers helped by damping down fire breaks and low vegetation in an effort to prevent the blaze from spreading further.

By 8.45pm, the fire service said crews had made good progress and the incident was scaled back to two fire engines and one four-by-four.

Firefighters remained at the woodland throughout the night and into Tuesday morning. People were continuing to be advised to stay away from the area while the final hot spots were dealt with.
