A group of friends have walked from Chichester to Birdham to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease after their childhood friend Jamie was diagnosed with the condition.
The walk, which took place on Sunday, 28 June 2026, was organised to support Jamie and his family, as well as the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The group have so far raised around £10,000 for the charity.
Motor Neurone Disease, often known as MND, is a life-shortening neurological condition which affects the nerves that control movement. It can cause progressive muscle weakness and may affect a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.
Jamie’s diagnosis came as a devastating shock to his family and friends. Since then, the Motor Neurone Disease Association has provided vital support to Jamie, his wife and their children.
That help has included practical advice, emotional support, guidance on home adaptations and the provision of a wheelchair to help Jamie maintain his mobility. Friends say the support has made a huge difference, allowing Jamie to continue getting out to watch his children play football and spend valuable time with loved ones.
Those taking part in the walk said they wanted to do something positive in response to the diagnosis and help raise funds for a charity that is supporting families affected by MND.
All donations from the fundraiser will go to the Reading and West Berkshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The group said they hope the money raised will help the charity continue improving lives today, while supporting research towards finding a cure for MND in the future.
Donations can be made through the JustGiving page, Jamie’s Chi Friends.
