Passengers flying from Gatwick and Southampton airports later this year are being warned they could face tougher action if they cause disruption on board flights.
Under new Government proposals, people who behave badly in the air could be banned from flying with all airlines, not just the carrier involved in the original incident.
Officials are understood to be exploring a scheme which would allow airlines to share information about difficult or disruptive travellers.
If introduced, the plans could mean a passenger who causes serious problems on one flight may be prevented from boarding with other airlines in future.
The proposals are aimed at tackling nuisance and anti-social behaviour on aircraft, particularly during busy travel periods when thousands of families are heading away on holiday.
Disruptive behaviour on flights can include verbal abuse, threatening conduct, refusing to follow crew instructions, excessive drunkenness or behaviour which puts other passengers and staff at risk.
Airlines already have powers to ban passengers from their own services, while serious incidents can also be reported to police. However, the proposed changes would go further by making it easier for carriers to alert each other to problem travellers.
The move could have an impact on passengers using major airports in the UK, including Gatwick and Southampton in the V2 Radio region, as the summer holiday season approaches.
Aviation bosses have repeatedly warned that disruptive behaviour can lead to delays, diversions and distress for other passengers, as well as creating extra pressure for cabin crew and airport staff.
The Government proposals are still being explored, and further details are expected in due course.
