Portsmouth Water is encouraging customers across Hampshire and West Sussex to reduce water waste as part of Water Saving Week.

The company is supporting households through its ‘Don’t let the good stuff go to waste’ campaign, which offers simple and practical ways to save water this spring.

As part of the campaign, Portsmouth Water is working with Save Water Save Money to offer discounted water butts, helping people collect rainwater to use during drier periods.

The company has also partnered with garden centres across Hampshire and West Sussex to distribute flyers and share advice on how residents can cut down on water waste, particularly in their gardens.

Portsmouth Water says hoses and sprinklers typically use around 1,000 litres of water an hour. It says small changes, such as switching to a watering can and harvesting rainwater, can significantly reduce the amount of water being wasted.

Bob Taylor, Chief Executive Officer for Portsmouth Water, said: “Saving water isn’t just about what happens inside your home - how you care for your garden can also make a real difference, especially this spring. That’s why it’s so important to us to support our customers with practical, easy ways to save water, whether that’s offering discounted water butts or working closely with local garden centres.

“Across Hampshire and Sussex, we’re incredibly lucky to have some of the best chalk water sources in the world, and protecting them is something we can all play a part in. We want to reassure our customers that saving water doesn’t have to mean big or complicated changes. Even small adjustments in how you use water, particularly during the warmer months, can really help and make a lasting difference.”

Portsmouth Water’s supply comes from chalk beneath the South Downs, which acts as a natural underground reservoir and filter.

Water Wise’s Water Saving Week runs from 4 to 8 May.
