Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead has been ranked among the best-performing hospitals in England for patient experience.

The hospital achieved the joint highest overall patient experience score in the latest national Adult Inpatient Survey, carried out by the Care Quality Commission.

Patients gave Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust an overall score of 9.3 out of 10, compared with a national average of 8.2.

The survey asked patients across 130 acute and specialist NHS trusts about the care they received during a hospital stay.

Queen Victoria Hospital scored 9.8 out of 10 for respect and dignity, 9.7 for kindness and compassion and 9.7 for the cleanliness of wards and hospital areas.

Confidence and trust in both doctors and nurses was rated at 9.5 out of 10.

The Trust also performed strongly in areas including how quickly patients were moved to a ward bed, whether their mental health needs were taken into account and whether families and carers received enough information to support patients after discharge.

Patients also rated the hospital highly for explaining what would happen next in their care once they left hospital.

Liz Blackburn, Acting Chief Nursing Officer at Queen Victoria Hospital, said: “What makes me most proud about these results is what they tell us about how our patients feel when they are in our care. Patients have told us they felt treated with kindness, compassion, respect and dignity, and that is something every member of our team should be incredibly proud of.

“At QVH we care for people at some of the most significant moments in their lives, whether they are recovering from major surgery, treatment or injury. The fact that our patients have rated us so highly for their overall experience is a wonderful tribute to the professionalism, skill and dedication of our staff.”

Despite the strong results, the Trust says it will continue to look at ways of improving patient care.

Feedback identified opportunities to strengthen support around accessibility and individual patient needs.

The hospital says it will use the findings from the survey to help shape further improvements to services and patient experience.
