Sussex Weald MP Nusrat Ghani has visited a third-generation dairy farm in Waldron which has diversified into cheesemaking and now operates its own 24-hour cheese vending machine.
The Delves family produces cheese using milk from its own dairy herd and has developed a growing customer base for its locally made products.
The farm operates to high-welfare standards and is accredited by both the Vegetarian Society and Compassion in World Farming.
During her visit, Ms Ghani was shown how the cheese is made, including the process of turning and brushing the cheeses as they mature.
She also had the opportunity to help pack one of the farm’s cheddars.
The family supplies cheese for weddings and other celebrations, while its products are also available at The Star Inn in Waldron, with plans to appear on further local menus.
Ms Ghani said: “Who doesn’t love cheese? The Delves family have now made it easier than ever to get your cheese fix with their 24-hour cheese vending machine.
“Hearing about their cheese-making business has been an eye-opener. Turning the milk from their own dairy herd into delicious cheese takes many months.
“I witnessed first-hand the process of turning and brushing the cheeses and got to have a go at packing one of their famous cheddars.
“They have a growing customer base, with people travelling for hours for their cheese selection, to providing cheese wheels and produce for weddings and celebrations. They’re even on the menu at The Star Inn, in Waldron, with plans to appear on other local menus.”
Ms Ghani also said rural businesses and farmers continued to face pressures, including recent hot weather and water issues.
She added: “Local businesses need our support more than ever and I am always calling on the government to better support our rural businesses.
“Many of our farmers are having a tough time, especially given the hot weather and water issues, however, I’m so pleased to see this great example of how a local business has diversified and captured the hearts and tastebuds of a new market.”
