New experiences including virtual reality, fine dining and thrill attractions could be introduced at Spinnaker Tower as a new operator is sought to run the landmark attraction.
The 170-metre tower, which officially opened in October 2005, is one of the South Coast’s most recognisable structures, offering panoramic views across Portsmouth, the Solent and the Isle of Wight. Since opening, it has been operated by Continuum, a company which manages visitor attractions across the UK.
Over the years, the tower has hosted a wide range of experiences and events. These have included abseiling challenges, High Tea in the Clouds, a Sky Bar, as well as private functions such as weddings and comedy nights, helping to establish it as both a tourist destination and an events venue.
A tender process is now underway to appoint a new operator, with documents outlining a vision to build on the tower’s existing offer while maintaining its primary role as a public viewing platform. Alongside this, there is scope to introduce additional attractions that reflect the city’s heritage and culture.
Among the ideas being considered are a café, enhanced food and drink experiences including fine dining, themed comedy and cocktail evenings, and immersive virtual reality activities designed to appeal to a wider audience. There is also potential for expanded use of the venue for private hire and special events.
Financial projections suggest the attraction could generate around £90 million over a 25-year period based on current performance. However, with further investment and an expanded programme of activities, income could rise to £110 million or more through areas such as food and beverage, sponsorship and advertising.
